Green Spider Foundation

The mission of the ZPOK – Green Spider Foundation is to enable nonprofit organizations to communicate and transmit their message through the media. Our work is based on the belief that non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can only change the World if the World knows about them.

Collaborative Film-making and Digital Identity

With the current problems of the Hungarian educational system – and particularly film and media studies a growing number of kids have neither the family background, nor the access to decrease the digital  gap between their possibilities and mainstream society teenagers. The principal aim of our program is to make marginalized kids conscious of their digital identity, increase  their self confidence by developing  and realizing our media education program.

Grassroots 2015

We aim to cocreate the  program in collaboration with Bagazs Association  and their digital education program targeting the  Roma community of Bag and with Számá Dă Noj! – Vigyázz Reánk! Egyesület with its local school  experiences in Pécs, Motiváció  in Szeged, Pressley Ridge  in Salgótarján and other partner grassroots  organizations, so that it is a complex education program drawing on working with children in different  learning settings and skills sets.

Through introducing the usage of various technologies, apps, data handling and privacy, we will attempt  to make their digital presence and activities safer and more conscious. We will empower children living  in media poverty so that they can use filming as a medium for expressing their thoughts, identity and  opinion. The process will involve identifying themes, shooting, creating, editing and publishing the  materials. The workshops will focus on the following:

Project planning: from planning to evaluation
Basic into to visual arts, filming and photographing with online free applications and softwares
Use of relevant social media, mobile apps
Creative Commons, legal usage of music, photo and film
Basics of online publishing
Creation of short video for promoting the program for other organisations
Involvement of other grassroots organisations and their programs

In our new project, we want to pass on the methods and personal experiences of active, individual and community action for social change to a wider circle. Our target groups: homeless people, social workers, donors open to social responsibility and socially excluded people. We cooperate with AVM, a new organisation called the School of Public Life, Van Esély Foundation and civil organisations providing social care.

Three Million People

This is a short documentary on the housing crisis of Hungary. The video highlights homeless people who live and look like middle class people, but they don’t have a permanent place to stay. Three million people, that is almost one third of the population lives under conditions that does not meet their needs.

Bódvalenke – Fresco Village

SozialMarie 2014 Audiance awards: “Bódvalenke is a 90% Roma village steeped in dire poverty located in a picturesque setting in the East of Hungary. The Fresco Village project aims at pulling the village out of its isolation and poverty by inviting Roma painters to paint murals on the walls and so create an exhibition of European Roma painting – and thereby attract tourists to create jobs and new venue for intercultural dialogue. “

There’s no such thing as Teaching

Erika Csovcsics is the director of the Budai Városkapu Education Center (Pécs), an institution of 6 schools. She won the tender, and she immediately opened the door wide-open for civil society organizations. There is a lot to do.

Our latest project:

The SAVE AS – Real faces of homelessness. Awareness raising and crowdfunding campaign. Our goal was to deconstruct existing prejudices about homelessness. At the same time, we aimed to test public fundraising as a means of fund-sourcing and solidarity activism in the field of social services. (BLOG)

——————————————————————————————-

Green Spider was named after its first action: 20 years ago, at the beginning of the history of Internet we provided Internet access and other web-based communication tools as a nonprofit service to many Hungarian environmentalists and nonprofit organizations, creating a sort of “green web”.

The activities of the Foundation have expanded during the years. The focus of our activities in the past three years have targeted the production of audiovisual material to be utilized by civil society, as well as by marginalized and disadvantaged social groups and communities. Our partners include a school catering for the needs of marginalized and excluded students, a community providing education about sustainable local solutions, an organisation working for the rights of the homeless, as well as organisations and institutions that educate and practice environmental rights and consumer protection advocacy on a social level.

Our goal is to produce accessible and viewer-friendly film(s), audio-visual methods through which we highlight the main mission statements of the project.

The goal of our Foundation is to expand and sensitize the knowledge of people, organisations, and institutions coming from differing backgrounds, interests, educational, and world-view experiences. We set out to bridge the gap between the majority population and peripheral, disadvantaged groups, who are outside of social attention. We hope to transmit durable practices that can be used to preserve local cultural knowledge and particularities.

We believe in the importance of lifelong learning and in the fact, that film, media, and audiovisual learning is an important tool in this process.
